The Wilkes County Board of Education recognizes the use of tobacco products is a health, safety and environmental hazard for students, employees, visitors, and school facilities. The Board believes that the use of tobacco products on schools grounds, in school buildings and facilities, on school property or at school-related or school sponsored events is harmful to the health and safety of students, staff and visitors. Therefore, NO STUDENT, STAFF MEMBER, OR SCHOOL VISITOR MAY BE PERMITTED TO USE TOBACCO PRODUCTS ON SCHOOL PROPERTY AT ANY TIME. This will include athletic fields and parking lots owned, leased, rented, or chartered by the Wilkes County Board of Education.
For the purposes of this policy, “tobacco product” is defined to include cigarettes, cigars, blunts, bidis, pipes, chewing tobacco, snuff and any other items containing tobacco. “Tobacco use” includes smoking, chewing, dipping, or any other use of tobacco products.
TARDIES
Students who arrive at school after 7:45 a.m. are considered tardy. Please encourage them to arrive promptly and be ready to begin the school day. Students who are tardy must sign-in at the office. Five (5) unexcused tardies converts to an unexcused absence.
The individual teacher will handle class tardiness. Repeat offenders may be referred to the administration.
VOLUNTEERS
The Wilkes County Board of Education recognizes the valuable contributions which school volunteers can make to the learning process and educational goals of the school district. Instructional programs are enhanced through the participation of community members, local business and industry, and family of the students. These volunteers contribute time, resources, and expertise and provide needed support to help ensure educational success for all children.
Schools will notify all parents and school employees of their right to take four hours of paid leave from their jobs every year in order to volunteer in the schools as stated in G.S. 95-28.3.
Any volunteer who works in a supervisory role with students in instructional, athletic, extracurricular activities, or field trips shall be required to submit an application and undergo a criminal background check annually. Bus Rules and Regulations
- Riding the bus to and from school is a privilege provided by the Wilkes County Board of Education. Appropriate behavior on the bus is necessary if you wish to continue riding the bus. Inappropriate behavior may result in having to find another means of transportation to and from school. Suspension from the school bus does not permit or provide an excuse for the absence of a student from the school.
- Students shall at all times obey the directives of the school bus driver. Failure to do so may result in losing the privilege of riding the bus. The following violations will not be tolerated:
- Improper boarding/departing procedure
- Destruction of property
- Fighting/punching/tripping
- Hanging out the window
- Bringing injurious or offensive articles aboard
- Lighting matches or smoking, spitting, any use of tobacco products
- Littering
- Detracting noise and other behavior relating to school bus safety and the well being and respect of others
- In accordance with the Wilkes County Board of Education 100% Tobacco-Free Schools Policy students will be disciplined as follows:
- ALP, After School Detention, Community Service, or Out of School Suspension for up to 3 days, with tobacco education.
- ALP, After School Detention, Community Service, or Out of School Suspension for up to 3 days, with tobacco education.
- Out of School Suspension for up to 5 days.
- Out of School Suspension for up to 10 days.
- Major incidents such as fighting, gross insubordination, tampering with bus equipment, and throwing objects on/out of the bus will result in an immediate 3-10 days suspension from the bus depending on the administration’s judgment on the severity of the incident. Depending on the severity of the problem, suspension and/or expulsion from the bus may occur immediately at the discretion of the administrator.
- The rules are to be followed by all students who ride busses. The procedure for dealing with the bus problems is as follows:
- Each driver will keep documentation on problems with the child for minor and major offenses. On the second warning (minor incident), the parent will receive written notification from the driver, and the child must return the letter signed the next school day or referral will be made to the office. After the third warning (minor incident), or after a serious offense (major), the child will be referred to the office along with all documentation.
- Upon driver referral, the administrator may have a student conference just with a warning. Upon the second referral, the administrator will send home a letter to the parent. Upon the third referral, the administrator will take disciplinary action. Again, this is the order for problems that might not be so severe. Problems that are deemed “severe or more serious” will result in immediate suspension with a letter sent home to be returned or a parent conference.
- After three separate suspensions, the student may be suspended off the bus for the remainder of the school year. Suspensions will usually occur in the 3, 6, or 12 day intervals.
*Students will not be permitted to go home with other students on a bus they are not assigned to. Students will not be allowed to board any transportation other than the one assigned without prior approval.
Thank you for helping us to provide a safe ride for our students.

EWMS Attendance Make-up Time Procedures
According to Wilkes County School Board Policy 4400, middle school students must make up all unexcused absences and any excused absence over 12 at a rate of 3 hours per day. Additionally, five unexcused tardies converts to an unexcused absence that also must be made up. In order to provide students with convenient make-up time, East Wilkes Middle School will consider participation in the following activities appropriate time served:
- After-School Tutoring/Make-up Time
- Teachers may offer tutoring after-school from 3 – 4:30 pm. Individual teachers will communicate availability of tutoring opportunities. Parents/students must make prior arrangements for students to access this opportunity.
- Academic Club Activities
- Students who are involved in academic club activities (i.e Jr. BETA, Envirothon Team, Battle of Books, etc.) can consider time after school involved in the sponsored event as make-up time. Students must make arrangements with the club sponsor to validate time served.
- Extra-Curricular Activities – NOT ATHLETICS
- Students participating in extra-curricular activities (NOT athletics – i.e. Acoustic Jam Society, Recycle Team, etc.) can consider time after school involved in the sponsored event as make-up time. Students must make arrangements with the club sponsor to validate time served. Because of the NC Middle School Athletic Association requirements for attendance, athletics cannot be considered for make-up time.
- Saturday Academy
- Students can attend Saturday Academy on scheduled Saturdays from 8 am–2 pm. Students must sign-up the week prior to the Saturday Academy. Students must bring their own lunch, work and/or something to read. They must be picked up promptly at 2 pm. All school rules apply during Saturday Academy. Students who do not abide by these rules and procedures will not be allowed to stay for further Saturday offerings.
