Welcome to Wilkesboro Elementary School. The students, staff, and parents are very proud of our school located at 1248 School Street in Wilkesboro, North Carolina. We are a part of the Wilkes County School System. Our school contains two self-contained exceptional children's classes, two pre-kindergarten classes, and three classes at each grade level, kindergarten through fifth. Approximately 411 students attend Wilkesboro School.
Wilkesboro Elementary School has a tradition of high student achievement. Students, staff, and parents should be proud of the end-of-grade test results from the 2010-2011 school year. Wilkesboro achieved expected growth on the composite score for the end-of-grade tests in math and reading. With the raised cut score of the federal No Child Left Behind program, our AYP (Adequate Yearly Progress) proficiency rate did drop to 77.73%. That was down just over 12 points. Our school will be a School of Watch in terms of the federal program, No Child Left Behind, because we did not meet the proficiency bar for our economically disadvantaged students. The expected bar was 71.6% in reading and 88.6% in math. Our scores for all students surpassed the expectation, but not for the subgroup of economically disadvantaged students. Considering the challenging budgetary constraints of the year, we feel like we did well. During a recent session with a representative from the NC Department of Public Instruction we learned that over half the schools in North Carolina did not meet AYP.
In addition to having great students and a wonderful staff, we are fortunate to have an active PTO and volunteer program. The PTO is very supportive in all aspects of the school. This winning combination of great students, a dedicated staff, and outstanding parents makes Wilkesboro Elementary School a great place to work and learn!
