WWHS EV Team: A History
The students at West Wilkes High School began participating in the Electric Vehicle Challenge program during the 2005-2006 school year. Of all the high schools in North Carolina, only four accepted the E.V. Challenge; ours is the only high school in Western North Carolina to do so. The students participating in this program have benefited by becoming more responsible as they learn leadership and teamwork skills that they can use in many aspects of their lives. Hard work is a regular part of daily life after joining this team; you must set your own goals and deadlines according to a strict schedule, and achieve everything you set out do to. With an ambitious team backing you up, that is not an overly difficult task. The team is truly one full of professionals, some of who have advanced social and public speaking skills, others who excel in mechanic and electrical work, there is the computer savvy, the creative, and the veterans of previous years' teams. Despite all of our different personalities, we are a very united team of teenagers joined together from different groups and classes to work towards a common goal and achieve our dreams.
Classes involved in this program include Fundamentals of Technology, Drafting I, II, III, IV, Shop, Transportation Systems, and Advanced Studies. The team is active in several public events including the Wilkes County Holiday Parade, local athletic events, various public demonstrations, radio and television broadcasts, and numerous National and State Competitions. After the team’s first year in the EV Challenge, we surpassed our ten thousand dollar goal from sponsors and that number has been steadily increasing since the first year. To see a list of those sponsors from both this year and years past, please visit our “Community” page.

Trophies* and Awards
Through the years this team has been active, we have traveled to several different competitions and events. By joining other schools and independent E.V. owners at these rallies, we forge friendships and make allies who will help us if ever we need it, and visa-versa. We trade tips and tricks to improve our electric vehicles' performance both in competition and as daily drivers. It is safe to say that the entire team benefits from these short trips. At these events, there are competitions such as Troubleshooting, Autocross, Drag Racing, Range, Vehicle Design, and many more. Below is a list of our trophies and awards from various events over the past four years.
